The name stretch marks is slightly miss leading as they do not occur because your skin has been stretched to far. These scars which can range from bright red to silvery white are actually caused by the glucocorticoid hormones. Stretch marks develop as we experience different events in our life such as pregnancy, rapid weight gain, rapid growth (puberty), or rapid muscle building (body builders). When we go through these experiences the glucocorticoid hormones interfere with the production of collagen and elastin fibers necessary for skin strength and structure which in turn causes the epidermis and the dermis layers of the skin to tear.

Stretch marks, most people assume once you get them you are stuck with them; in most cases this is simply not true. There are actually numerous procedures and treatments available to get rid of your battle scars although some are more effective then others.

Traditional surgery is a drastic option however it is very effective. This is usually recommended if there is a lot of excess skin to be removed especially after weight loss. Neroli essential oil, which has an exotic floral scent is extracted from the blossom petals of the orange tree. To use, mix three to four drops of the essential oil into liquid lanolin and apply directly to your stretch marks.

Patchouli essential oil, which has an musky or earthy aroma is extracted from the non flowering leaves of the plant Pogostemon cablin. This oil is known as one of the most effective essential oils for a vast number of skin care applications, for use on stretch marks a massage mixture is recommended.

Tangerine essential oil, from the citrus family has a fresh sweet scent and is extracted from the outer peel of the fruit. Again a massage mixture is recommended, mix two or three drops into one ounce of your favorite carrier oil and apply to stretch marks. You can also use eight to ten drops in your bath water.
