Beauty and skin care has long been a billion dollar industry however it seems that the type of products desired by consumers is changing. There has been a shift in recent years for products which are perceived as being nontoxic to our bodies as well as our environment. This meaning; products made from natural ingredients such as herbs, flowers, fruits, and essential oils to name a few. Manufacturers from huge corporations to home based businesses have been listening and now there are thousands of products for the consumer to choose from.

Natural skin care products are supposed lack synthetic chemicals and only contain nutrients that are naturally occurring in nature with an emphasis on botanical ingredients with a process that leaves them intact. Typically natural skin care products combine these natural substances with natural preservatives, humectants, various emulsifiers and a variety of surfactants.

When searching for natural skin care products it is important to realize that the FDA does not define the word “natural”. All of the ingredients in the products are defined as being chemical and derived ingredients are considered to be unnatural ingredients. Skin care products as well as cosmetics sold to the public are not regulated by the FDA before they are offered for sale. For this reason some people who have decided to use a natural skin care approach have decided to make their own products in order to make sure they are applying only natural products to their skin.

The FDA has stated that there are not any ingredients that are guaranteed not to produce allergic reactions. If you are susceptible to allergies make sure you read the label carefully; for instance if you are allergic to bees then take care that no products even associated with bees (ie. pollen, honey) are included because there is no guarantee of stingers not being in the product.

Some of the ingredients used for skin are:
-Chamomile which has been shown in to have healing and anti-inflammatory abilities when used topically.
-Honey has the ability to help your skin take in moisture as well as retain moisture. It is filled with antioxidants and contains some anti-microbial properties. Products which contain the appropriate amount of honey can be effective at preventing the sun from harming your skin and some experts suggest it can also rejuvenate your skin.
-Shea butter in an unrefined form may be useful for treating skin problems including psoriasis, dermatitis, stretch marks and eczema.
-Jojoba is considered to be a natural moisturizer for your skin.

A natural skin care regime is not a quick fix but it has long lasting effects when it is supported by healthy eating, exercise, adequate sleep, relaxation and a generally healthy life style. Many experts in the field also recommend vitamins and minerals to supplement your diet and of course water to keep your body hydrated and functioning at its ultimate levels. The important point to remember is that skin care does not just happen from the outside; skin is the largest organ of the body and its health and integrity is essential for good health and should be recognized and treated as such.
