Men’s Skin Care: It Is A Necessity
February 14th, 2008    Subscribe To Our FeedThe skin care industry in the past has marketed primarily to women and teenagers but this is slowly changing with the emergence of skin care product lines targeted at men. There has also been a slight shift in the marketing of unisex products as men are now starting to appear in the advertisement campaigns. The demand for men’s skin care products has been increasing due to an increase in the desire to ward off the signs of aging and also due to a new focus on health implications.
This new trend is also precipitated by the general changes in our society. Older individuals are competing to get and keep jobs against a perceived younger and more educated work force. There is also the change in relationships, many middle aged and senior men and women are finding themselves in the dating arena once again as divorce is becoming common place.
Although men and women are faced with the similar skin issues such as acne, blemishes, age spots, wrinkles and the general aging process men have unique issues which make skin care of even greater importance. In general men have not focused much attention on skin health or prevention, however this is slowly changing as it becomes a more accepted topic.
Most men shave on a daily or regular basis which in itself is a harsh process for the skin to endure, it depletes the skin of its natural oil and hydrolytic layer. Shaving especially when done quickly and without enough lubrication can lead to cuts, abrasions, rashes and ingrown hairs. This constant routine can take its toll on skin integrity and having sensitive skin just adds to the possibility of further irritation and sensitivity.Another reality for men is environmental and lifestyle stresses as well as sun damage acquired at the work place and during recreational activities; this is compounded by the lack of prevention such as sunscreen. It should be noted that men are much more likely to get skin cancer than women. In fact men get twice the overall number of skin cancers and three times more squamous cell carcinomas than women do.
Men due to their production of testosterone produce and secrete a larger amount of both sweat and oil. Men tend to abuse their skin in a variety of ways including excessive sun exposure, inadequate cleansing and moisturizing, and insufficient water and mineral intake. When all of these factors are combined it is understandable why men are starting to wake up to the necessity of having their own skin care regime and are starting to take preventative measures to avoid future skin problems.
