August 25th, 2008    Subscribe To Our FeedThe best acne scar treatment should involve prevention however if scaring has indeed occurred all is not lost.
Treatments are available ranging for natural remedies, over the counter solutions, ointment and topical creams, prescribed by your doctor to laser treatment. The treatment you under take will depend on the degree and type of acne scaring you have.
Although laser and surgical treatments for acne scaring have advanced tremendously in recent years, laser surgery should be considered a last resort. If however surgery is desired and recommended by your doctor or dermatologist then there is news on the laser surgery front.
Individuals suffering from both acne lesions and scaring have experienced fantastic results, showing significant improvements in the appearance of scars as well as a reduction in sebum production. Sebum is an oily substance that is produced by specialized glands in our skin that naturally moisturize however over production can lead to pimples and blackheads.
There are four main surgical treatments used to treat acne scars:
1. Microdermabrasion is a mini peel procedure in which aluminum oxide crystals are projected onto the surface of the skin and this action causes layers of the epidermis to be exfoliated.
2. Photorejuvenation essentially involves a pulse of light which is transmitted through a small, smooth glass hand piece which is gently placed over the skin promoting the formation of new collagen.
3. Laser Skin Resurfacing is a controlled vaporizing of the epidermis layer of the skin where by skin is removed layer by layer. At the same time heat is applied to the dermis layer causing it to shrink and tighten; as the dermis heals the skin becomes more taut, uniform and smooth.
4. Surgical Excision is the actual surgical removal of the scar. This is sometimes necessary and is often very effective for ice pick and boxcar scars.
Again which treatment is best for you needs to be discussed with a professional as skin is very individual there is right procedure for everyone. The type and severity will be taken into account as well as the characteristics of your skin in general as these will help to determine how your skin will respond to any given treatment plan.
